What Size DTF Transfer Should You Use on a Shirt?

One of the most common DTF questions is also one of the easiest to get wrong: how big should the transfer actually be? Print it too small and a full-front design looks lost; too big and it creeps into the collar or wraps the seams. The right size comes down to two things — where it goes and what size garment it's going on. Here's a practical guide.

Quick reference: common DTF transfer sizes

Typical widths for an adult shirt. Height just follows your design's proportions.

• Left-chest logo: 3.5"–4" wide
• Adult full front (standard): 10"–12" wide
• Adult full front (oversized): 12"–14" wide
• Full back: 11"–15" wide
• Sleeve: 2.5"–4" wide
• Hat / cap front: 4"–5" wide, about 2.25" tall
• Youth full front: 6"–8" wide
• Toddler / onesie: 4"–6" wide

Left-chest logos

Aim for about 3.5" to 4" wide. Placement matters as much as size: center it over the left chest, roughly 4"–6" from the vertical center of the shirt and about 7"–8" down from the shoulder seam. When in doubt, sizing down slightly reads more polished than going too big.

Adult full-front prints

A standard front graphic lands around 10" to 12" wide, positioned about 3"–4" below the collar. Going for a bold, modern oversized look? Push to 12"–14", but keep it clear of the side seams so it presses flat and even.

Full-back prints

Backs can go big — 11" to 15" wide depending on the shirt size and the look you want. Start the top of the design a few inches below the collar seam.

Sleeves, hats, and small placements

Sleeve prints usually run 2.5"–4" wide; hat fronts about 4"–5" wide and just over 2" tall to fit the front panel. Small placements are perfect for filling the leftover space on a gang sheet.

Sizing for youth and toddler shirts

Scale down for smaller garments. A youth full-front is usually 6"–8" wide, and toddler or onesie prints around 4"–6". Quick rule of thumb: the design should span most of the printable chest without crowding the collar or seams.
